The story behind the expedition. Richard Cullen learnt to dive with Divecrew in Jan 2007, and has been involved with Teenage Cancer Trust for the past 3 years. He promised Marc Woods that one day he would help try and raise £100,000 to open a Teenager Trust Unit. Since discovering diving he has set himself the target of diving Scapa Flow and combining this with raising the £100,000. Richard hopes to able to access his huge circle of contacts through his work.

Richard has taken up the Challenge with his new dive buddy James Doel. James has helped with Richard with his early dives, become good friends and established a great level of trust vital between divers. They are completing their preparations together starting with the Deep Course in June. This will be tested in the Red Sea together in August and then they move onto the wreck course in September. This bond is evident to others as noted by Marc Wood when he met James -

'I am a good mate of Richard's and for him to trust you as much as he does means you must have some very special qualities. Look after him in Scapa'

Richard plans to interest Television with the life interest angle of a 57 year taking up a new challenge as well as large corporations

Divecrew keen to be involved in this exciting project have also committed to help raise funds, and we hope to be able to help in raising at least £100,000.

A large chunk will come from each person signing up to dive the German Fleet. We hope this is only the start.

Divecrew will also be asking all our students and members of the coming months to dig deep and help with the sponsorship, with small donations being added to each course and sales in the Dive Centre. As well as other events such as Beach Clean ups on the south coast with money raised being split between Teenage Cancer Trust and Project aware

Teenage Cancer Trust builds cancer units specifically for teenagers and young adults with cancer. Where these units don't exist teenagers are either placed within paediatric units or amongst the elderly.

Teenage Cancer Trust aims to build twenty cancer units to cover the need within the UK. Each cancer unit costs approximately £750,000.

Patients are treated along side their peers in the most positive environment that can be created.

These units are estimated to improve the survival rate of the patients by up to 15%.
