We had an amazing trip to
Bonaire - we saw Sea Horses, Frog Fish, Turtles, Eagle ray and so much more.
The joy of jumping into the trucks and lurching off to a deserted dive site
was out of this world. The holiday was finished in style with Divecrew's
first holiday wedding!

What can I say? FABULOUS HOLIDAY!! But as we braced ourselves against temps of 3 degrees, snow and a power cut, not to mention emergency medical on call for the last 48h, I ask myself – was it all a dream??
Bonaire is truly a divers’ paradise, just as all the car number plates claim. The diving was relaxing to the extent that everybody felt comfortable doing a self-dive without need of guide, PADI superhero/guru and this will have provided excellent experience to record in our logbooks. The dive sites were plentiful and could be reached easily by truck. Putting on the kit was often the rate-limiting step to swimming out to the drop-off where, less than 25-50 yards from the shore, a wealth of wonders were to be discovered. Wrecks, staggeringly beautiful intact soft and hard corals, eagle and stingray, tarpon, octopus, sea horse, frogfish, sea snakes and a collection of moray all within a few breaths from the parked truck is why divers come from all over the world. Why has it taken Divecrew so long to discover this gem of a place, I ask myself? Bonaire is not especially pretty or sophisticated, but it is truly unspoilt and beckons the eager diver to explore its diverse charms. Where else in the world would flamingos wade within eyesight of towering ice burg-like mounds of salt, or divers disappear beneath a world famous town pier on a night dive, within view of evening diners, or where divers in a state of near nakedness can walk though the town car park to pee in the sea without the locals even batting an eyelid? Such is the magnetism of Bonaire which grew on us as each day of our trip went by. I’m sure we will return, perhaps even in 2009!
Buddy dive resort was everything the diver could want – air and Nitrox on tap in the only drive-thru on the island, availability of boat diving to the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire, comfortable and functional rooms, a free rum-punch party each week and easy access to restaurants, bars and shops. The resort service was perhaps as one would expect in the Caribbean, laid-back and unhurried. We all became rather chilled as a result. As for the leader of the pack, Collin, this was our second holiday under his inspired direction. Nothing was too much trouble. When we were busy chilling, Collin was busy organising those little details every self-respecting holiday diver really can’t be assed to do for himself. Always cheerful, helpful and eager to please, Collin (kept in check by his brick-like spouse Kate) was the perfect host. We always knew everything would be ok with him around in the water as well as on terra firma, but he also inspired confidence to go it alone if we wished. His depth of diving knowledge was shared freely and we all have come away wiser divers as a result. The group functioned well together and new friendships (and relationships) were forged, together with a reunion between dive buddies of old.
48h after touching down to a cold Heathrow, I find myself inexplicably reaching for my chequebook to put down a substantial deposit for another holiday in 12 months time. This must be a rare form of delayed nitrogen narcosis, or perhaps that familiar tingling marking the onset of inevitable alcohol withdrawal……….
Thank you both very much indeed for making our Bonaire dream come true and for being such buddies in every sense of the word. If by any chance any of this leaks out onto the Divecrew website surely surfers will think this has been solicited – no way! I challenge anybody to have a good time in Bonaire under your care and mentorship, or for that matter any other dive destination you may care to take us to. With many happy memories and thanks again,
Kind regards Max & Clare Pitcher
